Albania Appoints World’s First AI-Made Minister

Taylor, Alice. “Albania Appoints World’s First AI-Made Minister.” POLITICO, POLITICO, 11 Sept. 2025, www.politico.eu/article/albania-apppoints-worlds-first-virtual-minister-edi-rama-diella/.

This article discusses Albania’s decision to introduce artificial intelligence into the political realm with the appointment of an AI minister. The AI, named Diella, will be responsible for public procurement, overseeing the purchase of goods, services, and works from the private sector. The decision on tenders will be completely handled by Diella to avoid corruption, a common issue in Albania in the area of public procurement. Prime Minister Edi Rama states, “100 percent incorruptible and where every public fund that goes through the tender procedure is 100 percent legible.”

This issue is an interesting one to me, in that I am not sure if I support this use of AI. I can see the benefits, especially in light of the frequent occurrence of corruption, however, I believe public officials should be human. If AI can do a better job, perhaps that is the route that should be taken. I’ll be checking back to see how this works out.
