Why A.I. Should Make Parents Rethink Posting Photos of Their Children Online

Chen, Brian X. “Why A.I. Should Make Parents Rethink Posting Photos of Their Children Online,” New York Times, 11 Aug. 2025, www.nytimes.com/2025/08/11/technology/personaltech/ai-kids-photos.html.

In this article, Chen discusses how many parents, including himself, have completely stopped sharing photos of their children online or have opted to never do so. This is because with the rise of AI came the ability to easily create deepfake nude images. This can be done with any face and using any photo, and the websites and apps used to do so are numerous and everywhere. Some apps can even create “animations”. Thus, any child with their image on the internet can become a victim. Chen encourages parents to make mindful and informed choices about if and how they should share photos of their children.

This article offers incredibly important information as AI use continues to spread. Parents and others need to be informed of the very real risks that come with sharing images of children, or even themselves, online. Issues like these should also encourage people to consider other issues AI may pose to their safety, and the safety of those around them.
