“Marginalized Americans Are Highly Skeptical of Artificial Intelligence.” University of Michigan News, 2 July 2025, news.umich.edu/marginalized-americans-are-highly-skeptical-of-artificial-intelligence/.
Summary:
While AI is often seen as society’s “equalizer”, this article used that idea to lead into the lack of inclusiveness of this technology and poses the question: isn’t this technology meant to make all human lives easier? This aptly introduced a unique idea that I have not yet read about, which is the negative way in which a majority of marginalized Americans view AI. This article supports that claim through the data of a national survey, in addition to an assistant professor at the U-M School of Information and Digital Studies Institute who explains how AI may create a future of inequity if marginalized perspectives are ignored.
Why I liked it:
I appreciated reading about AI from such a familiar and reputable source that I have already trusted with my academic journey in undergrad, so I felt safe receiving the information it provided. With that safety, I was able to see myself in some of the data that was collected in their key findings, such as women’s unlikeliness to view AI positively. It also included an organized explanation of why this data matters and where the root is of this distrust we have in AI, which was clearly stated in a way that was credible.
