Penn, Ivan, and Karen Weise. “Big Tech’s A.I. Data Centers Are Driving Up Electricity Bills for Everyone.” New York Times, New York Times, https:/www.nytimes.com/2025/08/14/business/energy-environment/ai-data-centers-electricity-costs.html. Accessed 15 Oct. 2025.
In this article, authors Ivan Penn and Karen Weise discuss how the communities and neighborhoods near AI data centers are facing the consequences of the energy AI requires to keep running. The data centers use almost 4% of the energy in the United States, and it is expected this will increase to 12% in the next three years. And the bill for this energy is largely on the shoulders of the surrounding residents, not the companies. There has been a dispute going on in Ohio over the energy issues these AI data centers produce.
I liked this article because it offered a wealth of information in addition to personal anecdotes from those affected by these data centers. As AI continues to grow we will continue to see more and more issues arise. This article gives readers a look at the future of AI and energy, and offers a great starting point for a much needed conversation.
