From Mexico to Ireland, Fury Mounts Over a Global A.I. Frenzy

Mozur, Paul, et al. “From Mexico to Ireland, Fury Mounts Over a Global A.I. Frenzy.” New York Times, New York Times, 20 Oct. 2025, www.nytimes.com/2025/10/20/technology/ai-data-center-backlash-mexico-ireland.html.

In this article, authors Paul Mozur, Adam Satariano, and Emiliano Rodríguez Mega discuss how the rapid construction of AI data centers by U.S. companies is also occurring abroad. In Ireland, data centers use almost 20% of the nations electricity. In countries like Chile and South Africa, data centers are draining water supplies and causing more blackouts than ever. These centers are causing a massive strain on resources, similar to but often more significantly than, like we are seeing here in the U.S. These issues are leading to widespread fury.

This article offers a wealth of both facts and anecdotal stories. The article paints a very clear picture of the issues caused by these data centers, as well as the emotions rising in surrounding communities. I think it is important for Americans to be aware of how the rise of American AI companies are affecting other countries. I was previously unaware that data centers were being built outside U.S. borders.
