Patel, N. “LexisNexis CEO says the AI Law Era is already here.” The Verge, October 25, 2025 https://www.theverge.com/podcast/807136/lexisnexis-ceo-sean-fitzpatick-ai-lawyer-legal-chatgpt-interview
LexisNexis is the ultimate legal research database. It is ubiquitous among legal professionals and the gold standard for all things legal decisions, briefs, and research. Historically, it has operated solely as a database, but with new AI developments, LexisNexis has overhauled its system into an AI-driven research tool, which will not only provide users with relevant source material but also legal reasoning.
This article explores an interview with LexisNexis CEO Sean Fitzpatrick and Nilay Patel, editor-in-chief of The Verge. In the interview, Fitzpatrick and Patel discuss LexisNexis’s new program and its implications within the legal field. They explore the flaws of generic AI tools and the improper behavior they have manifested in the field thus far. Fitzpatrick discusses the practical use of LexisNexis AI and its specific accommodations to legal reasoning. Patel also pressed Fitzpatrick on how this advancement will change the legal landscape.
This contribution is especially relevant because it explores an AI system that is tailored to a specific subject area. LexisNexis limits its source information to reputable, relevant sources and trains its bot to operate within a very specific pattern of reasoning. It is legally driven; it was built by lawyers, for lawyers, within the legal system. This specified purpose has not yet been explored in many of the materials we have reviewed, though it has been debated in many of our class discussions.
