Responding to the AI Climate Crisis

Adam Zewe  |  MIT News. “Responding to the Climate Impact of Generative Ai.” MIT News | Massachusetts Institute of Technology, news.mit.edu/2025/responding-to-generative-ai-climate-impact-0930. Accessed 29 Oct. 2025.

The article addresses the massive carbon footprint being left behind from the building of large data centers around the world. Author Adam Zewe discusses how AI companies are researching and implementing less energy-intensive computing hardware while also lowering the operating power of their existing equipment. Zewe discusses the optimism for AI to be able to examine data and develop a solution for its own electricity and water use problem.

I liked this article because it actually did make me feel optimistic about the future of AI’s energy and other environmental issues. The data in the article points to a recent increase in the ability to develop more energy efficient hardware, which had previously not had any advances on in years. While I can’t fully understand the engineering and sciences behind these advances and initiatives, it is important to have a general understanding of where this is headed and how it will impact the environment.
