Picchi, Aimee. “Amazon cutting 14,000 jobs as the retailing giant embraces AI”. CBS News. 28 October 2025. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/amazon-layoffs-14000-job-cuts-ai/
As the title states, Amazon is cutting 14,000 jobs so it can focus more on AI and “lower its wage bill”. Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, even saying that by them investing in AI, it would allow them to reduce its human workforce and make the company more efficient. Even with Amazon having about 1.5 million employees and being the second-largest private employer in the U.S., and still cutting 14,000 jobs for AI, they also just announcing plans to hire 250,000 seasonal workers for the upcoming holidays.
I found this article interesting, less for the sole fact of cutting 14,000 jobs, but for making that statement after already saying they would hire 250,000 seasonal workers for the holidays, just earlier this month. This just shows Amazon wants to spend as little money as possible on their workers and only hire/pay for help when they know they will be busy. This also makes me worried for the future of other major companies that often supply hundred of thousands to millions of jobs. Will they also start trying to switch over to AI? What will happen if there is not enough jobs for our ever increasing population?
