Fighting for the Health of the Planet with AI

Donti, Priya. “Fighting for the Health of the Planet with AI.” MIT News, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 7 Oct. 2025, news.mit.edu/2025/fighting-health-planet-ai-priya-donti-1007/.

In this article, MIT highlights the work of Assistant Professor Priya Donti, whose research bridges machine learning and renewable energy to make power grids more efficient and climate-resilient. Growing up with a deep awareness of global inequities, strengthened by trips to India and a high school teacher who emphasized sustainability, Donti has long wanted to address both climate change and social justice. At MIT, she leads efforts to design AI models that explicitly account for the physical realities of power systems, not just abstract predictions. Her algorithms can forecast solar power, optimize grid balancing under variable renewable input, and even use synthetic data to train models when real-world grid data is inaccessible due to proprietary or security constraints.

What I found especially compelling was Donti’s holistic vision. She doesn’t just build smarter algorithms, she builds tools for change. Her commitment to equity and collaboration, evident in her co-founding of Climate Change AI and her research philosophy, resonates more deeply than purely technical innovation. The idea that AI can help solve one of humanity’s biggest challenges (climate change) in a way that’s both scientifically rigorous and socially conscious feels powerful and hopeful.
