Hopewell, Robbyn. “Eckerd College Launches New Minor in AI Studies.” Eckerd College News, 12 Sept. 2025, https://www.eckerd.edu/news/blog/new-minor-in-ai-studies/. [Eckerd Col…AI studies]

In the fall 2025 semester Eckerd College, a small liberal arts college in St. Petersburg, Florida, introduced a minor in AI studies. This addition responds to the surge of AI usage science 2023, especially in the workplace. Employers prefer candidates experienced and knowledgeable in AI, so Eckerd felt it necessary to incorporate that into their courses.

Eckerd faculty felt comfortable to teach introductory and exploratory courses in AI. Core classes within the minor focused on “AI Culture and Communication” and “Writing in an AI World.”, while elective courses were interdisciplinary.  Students were interested and willing to pursue these topics, evidenced by the preliminary courses taught in recent semesters. As a College, Eckerd was enthusiastic about maintaining competitive graduates in the job market. In their opinion, that included AI literacy. With those factors in mind, Eckerd felt the natural next steps were to create their AI studies minor.

I felt like this is a good contribution to our annotated bibliography because it highlights how some schools are responding to the surge of AI in our world. Throughout many of our dissuasions, we have reflected on the inconsistencies and subjective way universities have “dealt” with AI, with many institutions having vague AI policies. This article contributes to this discussion, showing ways that higher education has embraced AI into its catalogs.
