Hosseini, Bijan. “How AI is Helping Save Hawaii’s Vanishing Birds”. CNN Business. Date accessed 24 November 2025. https://www.cnn.com/2025/11/24/business/video/hawaii-birds-perch-artificial-intelligence-creators-digvid
Professor Patrick Hart and some of his students, are in the mountains of Mauna Loa using AI to help save species of birds, native to the area, that are facing extinction or are endangered. To research and find what species are surviving, the University of Hawaii are using audio recording devices places around the mountains to see, more so hear, what species are surviving more than others. As these devices can record over 2 months of continuous audio, Professor Hart and his students teamed up with Google’s Deepmind’s AI software Perch. Perch can take the hundreds of hours of audio and sort it by species.
I found this video extremely interesting! As I haven’t looked much into how AI is being used in research that is unrelated to AI itself. So, being able to see Professor Hart and his students at the University of Hawaii, use this AI software in a way to help endangered species, is amazing to see. It makes me wonder what other research is being done with the help of AI, when AI advancement is not the main factor.
