National Education Association reviews the “Enviornmental Impact of AI”.

Association, National Education. “Environmental Impact of AI.” NEA, June 2025, www.nea.org/professional-excellence/student-engagement/tools-tips/environmental-impact-ai

This article written by the National Education Association reveals shocking information about the rate at which A.I. is negatively affecting the planet and environment. Some of the main research identified in the article is that the United States is facing more rapid effects of global warming than the rest of the world, due to its human activity. More information revealed in the article is that “Generating a single image using A.I. consumes the same amount of energy as charging a phone to full power.” (pg. 2). Their research suggests that training one large A.I. model can consume 5 times the lifetime emissions of an average car.

I liked this article because it really emphasized this growing problem of AI’s electricity use. It also included a portion on “considerations for educators”, that I thought was interesting.
