Valchine, Sophia, “AI tools like ChatGPT ‘help’ authors, but I see literature crumbling around me | Opinion”, Detroit Free Press, 25 June, 2025, https://www.freep.com/story/opinion/columnists/2025/06/25/ai-authors-booktok-books-theft/84050103007/
In this article on the Detroit Free Press, Sophia Valchine (an aspiring novelist), pretty simply summarizes my biggest dislike of AI: that it’s ruining the world of literature by eroding human creativity and stealing from other works. I particularly like it because it discusses something that I had wanted to talk about: the controversy with Darkhallow Academy: Year Two, which included a prompt by ChatGPT in the middle of the book’s text, revealing that not only was there poor proofreading, but that AI was used to write the novel, and that it was stealing another writer’s style to do so.
I think it’s a good article to post here because it offers a simple view of the effects of AI on literature. It’s written from the perspective of a writer who not only presents her view, but the views of those who use AI in writing.
