Electricity Costs Continue to Rise

“Residents of 49 States and Washington, D.C., Face Increasing Electric and Natural Gas Bills” Center for American Progress, www.americanprogress.org/article/residents-of-49-states-and-washington-d-c-face-increasing-electric-and-natural-gas-bills/. Accessed 29 Oct. 2025.

This article discusses the rising energy costs for individuals across the country and how the government policies in effect will make that unlikely to change in the near future. Places like the Appalachians and rural Missouri have been experiencing sky rocked electricity costs, which can be attributed to the spike in energy demands from AI data centers across the country. A Bloomberg News analysis found that areas located near large data centers were seeing a consistent 267 percent increase in home electricity costs than they had been five years earlier.

This article is an important contribution because it shows the real numbers of how this is directly affecting citizens all over America. The authors offer what seems like a reasonable and beneficial “solution”, that would involve data centers paying the offset spike in electricity fees for local residence effected; however, government policies are unlikely to support this. I like how the article placed a large focus on the recent proposals from the Trump administration, that would allow the AI companies to become even less regulated and therefore less liable for their damages.
